Meri Batakoja

Faculty of Architecture, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, North Macedonia

Dr Meri Batakoja is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Architecture at Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, where she teaches across all three cycles of study, covering courses in architectural design with a focus on public buildings and public space, as well as courses dedicated to research methodology in architecture.

Her research interests are directed towards the intersection of architecture, cultural theory and the history of ideas, with a particular focus on modernism, the avant-garde movements of the 20th century and museum architecture.

Deeply devoted to her native city of Skopje and to Macedonian architectural heritage, she has led or participated in a number of significant projects, among which: Rediscovering the Cultural Path (2009, 2010), Macedonian Architectural Atlas (2017), To Skopje, with Love – The Architectural Thought of Živko Popovski (2017), Živko Popovski: A Life Dedicated to Architecture (2016–), and Slavko Brezoski – The Pioneer of Macedonian Modernism in Brasília (2019–2025).

She has published scientific papers in internationally indexed journals such as Prostor, Architektúra & urbanizmus, as well as in The Urban Book Series of Springer Nature. She is co-author of the monograph Slavko Brezoski – The Pioneer of Macedonian Modernism in Brasília, the first book in English dedicated to the international promotion of this important Macedonian architect.
She has edited three books: To Skopje, with Love! The Architectural Thought of Živko Popovski (Private Print, 2017), The Architecture of the New Museology: From Museum-Building to Museum-Territory (Faculty of Architecture – UKIM, 2019), and Homage to Togetherness – 29th Session, International Summer School of Architecture (Faculty of Architecture – UKIM, 2020).

Prof. Batakoja is also active as a practitioner – architect, scenographer, curator and advocate for quality higher education.
