Memory of the Nation by KOLMO; Czech Republic

The Memory of the Nation exhibition is a reminder of the 100-year anniversary of founding of the separate Czechoslovak republic.

It is focused on milestones of national history, marked with totalitarianism. Moments, that have made oppressors and heroes of ordinary people. Moments laying in our past like shadows. In these days when democracy is questioned again, we see it as crucial to remind that freedom is not a matter of course. The line between free and unfree is very thin and fragile, broken very stealthily by unconcerned society overlooking small steps of oppression.

The location of the former Stalin monument in Prague with its famous city view is symbolic.
The multimedia exhibition itself consists of three linear objects, dealing with the view by specific form. Two of them allow the view, one blocks it. The object in the exposition Testimonies provides a panoramic view in one direction. The object in the part Images sets a wide viewing angle to a very limited number of visitors. Eventually, the Wall prohibits the outlook completely. All three are abstractly designed, their structures are hidden. Their dimensions are extreme, bringing feels of distress and discomfort to evoke the minimal spaces of concentration camps and prison solitary confinements.

What makes this project one-of-a-kind?

What are we proud of the most is that the exhibition raised questions about the nations past and made people think about the future.
