The new kindergarten and nursery for the market town of Stainz sits – beyond the multi-purpose hall and the new bus stop – pleasantly poised at the level of the newly planned car park. The entrance is sheltered at the lower end of the generous forecourt. Its design extends into parts of the car park to the north, creating a loop that allows minibuses to stop and depart safely.
The arrangement of pitched-roof volumes gives the ensemble a village-like character that blends well with the fine-grained fabric of the surrounding settlement. Launched in early 2022 as an invited, single-stage competition, the process selected our scheme as one of eight. In total, the building provides three kindergarten groups and three nursery groups, each accommodated in separate “timber houses” linked by a low, flat connecting volume.
Construction Method: Pure timber construction (on concrete slab, strip foundations, or basement).
Energy Concept: Great emphasis was placed on ecological construction: the building uses a timber-frame system with sustainable, regional materials.
A rooftop photovoltaic array covers part of the energy demand. The low connecting wing is extensively greened and complemented by deadwood habitats, stone mounds, and sand areas – enhancing biodiversity, improving the microclimate, and retaining rainwater. Natural ventilation, efficient thermal insulation, and a modern heating system ensure economical energy use.
