Angelos Sotiriou, Greece

Nominator's statement

I am pleased to nominate Angelos Sotiriou, a highly promising young architect whose work already demonstrates both creative vision and technical skill. Angelos is remarkably effective and driven in his approach to architectural design, consistently seeking innovation through research and thoughtful experimentation.
His commitment to exploring new ideas is evident in a recent project he developed—a responsive shading system for a private residence in Aitoloakarnania, Greece. This project not only reflects his sensitivity to environmental design but also his capacity to integrate functionality and aesthetics seamlessly.
Angelos was also nominated for the DOMa Awards 2023, further confirming the quality and potential of his architectural contributions. I believe he represents the kind of perspective and creativity that the BIG SEE Perspectives Award aims to recognize and support.

SUN SCRIPTS

The shading system was conceived in response to the region’s elemental extremes — torrential rains, searing sunlight, and the long silences of drought.

Vertical fins, though fixed, appear to move in rhythm, framing the sunset like a living canvas while gently shielding the interior from the gaze of those at the property’s threshold. Their tilt was not arbitrary, but born of a dialogue between simulation and sunlight, shaped by the desired lines of sight and the building’s own silent conversation with the sun.

A new material now clads parts of the façade — distinct from the original stone and wood — yet it belongs, for it holds time itself. Through its unceasing oxidation, it etches the passing days into its surface, becoming a quiet register of change.
