Ana Džokić
STEALTH.unlimited, Serbia, the Netherlands
Ana Džokić is an architect and one of the two leaders of STEALTH.unlimited, an architectural practice operating between Rotterdam and Belgrade. She founded STEALTH.unlimited in 2000 with Marc Neelen. STEALTH is considered one of the internationally recognized protagonists demonstrating the responsibilities and capabilities of architecture in contemporary societies that transcend neoliberal closure and monetization of space. Their work combines the fields of urban research, spatial interventions, curation, and spatial activism. In 2017, Ana received her PhD from Lund University at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm with a thesis based on her research “Upscaling, Training, Commoning” (Jovis Publishers, May 2018). The research follows STEALTH’s activities after the 2008 financial crisis – advocating for the transformation of architectural practice, for a rethinking of the economy through the collective capacities of citizens, and for the creation of urban environments and the common good. Ana studied architecture at the University of Belgrade (1998) and at the Berlage Institute in Amsterdam (2000).
At STEALTH, she emphasized the development of collective skills so that groups of people (from different backgrounds) could work together to activate thinking about their urban environment in the future. This includes mediating, activating, and building unusual and sometimes provocative coalitions. In this regard, Ana established the initiative “Ko gradi grad” (http://www.kogradigrad.org/ Who Builds the City, 2010) in Belgrade, which includes the long-term group housing project “Smarter Building” (Pametnejše Bivanje). Ana is a core member of the association “Stad in de Maak” (http://www.stadindemaak.nl/ City in the Making, 2013) in Rotterdam, which has been working for a decade with “flow assets” of stranded Dutch social housing. Stad in de Maak received the Job Dura Award for 2016 and has been selected to participate in the Rotterdam Biennale 2018-2020. STEALTH’s research projects have been part of numerous events (the Dutch pavilion at the International Architecture Biennale in Venice 2008, Tirana Biannual, 2009, Impakt Festival Utrecht, 2010, Evento Bordeaux, 2011, Cittadellarte / Fondazione Pistoletto, 2012; ). Ana has contributed to and co-edited with Marco Neelen a series of articles and publications on urbanism and architecture, focusing on urban development, spatial practices, and citizens’ contributions to the future of their cities.
