The Month of Design is an annual festival of know-how and creativity in design. It is an original platform for evaluation, promotion and identification of significant achievements in the field of design in the Southeast Europe. With its activities proactively promote the development of creative economy when creating a mental environment for creative and innovative interplay of ideas in creative and entrepreneurial sphere, connecting the creative entities in the new social and business environment and encourages an interdisciplinary, intergenerational and intercultural dialogue.

Progress and business potentials of Southeast Europe – Design
Internationally recognised managers, strategists and designers, working for the companies with design-aware culture, are to explore the strategies and concepts of brand development driven by design. They are also supposed to answer various questions such as: »How to combine design and development of new products; How to develop a brand that is different and generates products with high added value; How to create a brand that increases recognisability, demonstrates unique values and wins a client’s trust; How to interact with consumers, and How to sell well-designed products in these times?«

Round Table: Design Policies
At the Round table Wood policies, representatives of various woodworking niches and representatives of forestry institutions and government discuss the dilemmas of development of woodworking sector in the region. What kind of vision do we have, which strategies we use, how to measure their effects, what are examples of good practice, what are your recommendations for creating a successful wood policy?

Winners stage:
A series of short lectures by awarded designers presenting their winning projects aimed at confronting critical thinking about quality design, and establishing better quality communication within the profession and in relation to the lay public.
Experts Stage: Experts on new materials and technical solutions and designers / design oriented companies on well designed products.

October 12: Progress and business potentials of Southeast Europe – Wood

The conference aims to encourage the innovative practices in woodworking industry. Various woodworking professionals will be discussing different topical issues addressing the development of innovative woodworking in the region. The following topics are expected to be discussed at the conference: research and development projects, technological innovations, business opportunities of high added value, wood policies, wooden constructions, design and branding aimed to establish more competitive markets.

Wood Niches
In a competitive tight market, the differentiation strategy for specific niche markets in the development of innovative, well-crafted products with superior quality detailing, says that a strategic opportunity for woodworkers who could try to achieve added value is to create an opportunity to enter or strengthen cooperation in demanding European markets in global markets, and maintain green jobs in rural areas. Therefore, since niche markets are smaller in policy than others, these products mean exclusivity, uniqueness, differentness and, as such, a higher added value. Niches that will be presented:
– Wooden buildings in SEE region

– Design furniture

October 12: Progress and business potentials of Southeast Europe – Tourism

The development of high value-added tourism products, supported by the involvement of creative industries, can represent an answer to the question: How to contribute to the development of the South-Eastern European region in such a way that it becomes a creative, sustainable tourist destination, and how to avoid the traps of the mass, low-budget tourism.

Business & Design Forum: Renovation for Creative Tourism
Investors in tourism, architects, designers and other experts on the role and importance of integrating creative industries into the development of commercially successful tourist stories.
Investors, architects, designers and other representatives of creative sector will present, through good practices, how to renovate traditional buildings of cultural heritage through deliberate intervention. Functional transformation gives them a modern identity and tourist role. They will present the challenges they faced in developing a genuine boutique tourism stories as a cornerstone of tourist offerings in rural communities and small towns – from the use of local materials, the incorporation of traditional handicraft skills, to the development of a business-interesting programmes.

Design Expo  Tradeshow

Design Expo is a trade show encompassing Big See design winning designers and brands, high-quality design products as well as innovative materials, technologies and services that are vitally important for development and design processes. It represents a great opportunity to address business and creative elite in the region (19 countries, 350 mio people), it offers brand positioning and enhances brand awareness.

Big Business Match

Organised networking between design companies, producers, designers and suppliers. Their aim is to strengthen an in-depth exchange of expert opinions and information – a unique opportunity to become familiar with various innovations, novelties and solutions and to establish new business relations and opportunities.

Award Ceremony

The awards will occure in two parts: for winners on Stage 180˚ during the whole day and for Grand Prix winners on the evening gala event.

Within the scope of the Design Expo, the awards for excellence in Southeast European  will be granted in the categories of product and fashion design.
In addition BigSEE Visionary Awards will be given to those individuals who enrich and inspire design production, shift the boundaries in design and encourage creative forces in the Southeast Europe.

Slovenian Design Awards

Since 2003 Month of Design has been recognising designers and architects who have made significant contributions to the development of their professions in Slovenia. Awards such as Design of the year, Interior of the year, Timeless and Young Perspectives highlight the very best; they hold up mirror to the country’s industry and showcase the distinct design talent and ability at work here.

Eat & Drink Design

Eat & Drink Design event is a unique culinary Month of Design event which has been accompanying and supporting excellent design achievements, outstanding design brands and creative initiatives from Slovenia and entire Southeast Europe since 2008. Various design brands and culinary masterpieces provide an unforgettable design and culinary experience that will be long remembered.

BigSEE Exhibition

The exhibition in the national pavilions presents award-winning projects in the categories of product design and fashion from Southeast Europe. The exhibition aims to promote business and creative excellence and provide an in-depth insight into the current state of creativity in the region.

Big Architecture Conference: Know you / Know how / You know

An insight into the art and relevance of the urban; globalisation crisis and critical regionalism; Paul Ricoeur: »How to become modern, yet still not lose touch with tradition«

The symposium aims to discuss how critical regionalism, which involves architectural theory as well as spatial practice, can help resolve different types of crises in the third millennium. The crises which are, at least in terms of space, becoming increasingly global, be it urban, ecological, economic or health-related crises.
Kenneth Frampton is a British-American architect and an architectural historian who wrote a famous essay, “Towards a Critical Regionalism” (1983), which can nowadays be understood as a response to uncritical postmodern approach. In that essay Kenneth Frampton pointed out, back in 1983, that „universal civilization“ will not be able to solve global problems without taking into consideration „autonomous cultures“.

In the capital city of Ljubljana

Month of Design in Ljubljana represents an annual challenge and an opportunity for an entire business and creative world to test its achievements and professional practices, to address opinion leaders, connoiseurs and new clients, residents and visitors, to celebrate good design, and to contribute its share to a time when creativity has become an imperative.
Month of Design creates, curates and promotes various festival activities in the capital city of Ljubljana. Each year the event continues to unite many partners who are to organise partnership events taking place on a diverse palette of different places – expos, galleries, museums, shops and salons, exhibition places, studios, markets, restaurants, pop-up locations and warehouses, thus establishing a creative image and vibrations of a dynamic city.
