The Kossuth Lajos High School in Cegléd is a landmark of Hungarian Art Nouveau. Built in 1903, its gymnasium suffered damage during both World Wars and was rebuilt in the 1970s. Unfortunately, these renovations compromised the building’s original architectural integrity – simplifying the roof structure and altering the gymnasium with incongruous solutions.
Though once considered modern, the building no longer met contemporary needs. It lacked accessibility, and its heating, electrical systems, classroom layout, and insulation were outdated. The recent renovation carefully restored its architectural character, rebuilding the roof according to its original geometry and redesigning the decorative tile roofing.
A barrier-free ramp and a modern internal lift were added, while windows were replaced and doors renovated. Mechanical and electrical systems were completely updated, including a new heat pump heating / cooling system. The gym wing was rebuilt, solar panels installed, and the building insulated, with reinforced supporting structures.
Now fully modernized inside and out, the high school once again provides an inspiring and functional space for students and teachers alike.
