Hanging Gardens were initially designed for the Van den Berg Spice House in Graz. Inspired by the unique urban location of Van den Berg, we envisioned a mini-oasis—a hidden world for spice lovers amidst the city’s hustle and bustle. The “Hanging Gardens” are a tribute to the diversity and intensity of the spice world. With spices showcasing an impressive range of colors, textures, and properties—from healing and preserving to spicy and mild—we translated this richness into form, color, material, and light.
The interior reflects the lushness of the plant world, presenting spices in an atmosphere reminiscent of distant lands and cultures. Plants are carefully arranged on truck tarpaulins to create a floating, green landscape that captivates every visitor. The Hanging Gardens appear as floating, almost weightless plant containers, resembling islands adrift in a sea, evoking the exotic tropical islands where spices originate.
The installation uses white clotheslines mounted on galvanized ceiling hooks. This transforms a simple object made of everyday materials into a complex, visually striking arrangement.
